One of the best MotoGP races in years

I know many of my readers are more technical and I haven't blogged on anything non-motorcycles in a while but I had to post about the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix MotoGP race on Sunday. After some marked improvements to Casey Stoner's Desmosedici GP9's electronics the 2007 world champion has been completely unstoppable in the last 3 races. Seven time world champion Valentino Rossi even joked before the Laguna Seca round began that he would have to shoot Stoner in order to stop him.

In an amazing show of talent and aggressiveness from both riders, Rossi was able to finally stop the train that is Stoner. Knowing full well that if he let Stoner stay in front for long that he could pull away on his faster Ducati, Valentino made multiple daring and aggressive passes in order to maintain his lead providing for some of the most exciting and breath taking racing the sport has seen in many years.

The wheel to wheel race was brought to an end though when Casey Stoner ran wide in lap 24 of 32 and dropping his bike in the gravel. However the duo had been racing so hard that they had already obtained more than a 25 second lead on third place. So while Stoner was unable to re-challenge Rossi, he was still able to retain second place.

If you've ever wanted to check out a MotoGP race, I would highly recommend looking into this round.

Other highlights of this race are 2 new Americans riding as wildcards in the race from AMA Superbike, Jamie Hacking for Kawasaki and Ben Spies for Suzuki. Ben Spies, a personal hero of mine, rode very well for a MotoGP rookie taking 8th place overall. Going from a Factory Superbike to a Factory Works MotoGP bike is a huge step. The bikes take a huge step up in horsepower and weigh significantly less. Everything from how fast the bike stops to always there power curve is a huge undertaking… Both these riders also had to do double duty this weekend by competing in both the MotoGP and the AMA Superbike events.

That was an awesome race - though I think it was Rossi's experience that won the day.   If Stoner would have held it together a few more laps I think he could have easily passed Rossi. He was consistently pulling the fastest lap times.   What will be interesting to see is if Hayden gets picked up by Ducati?!

I hope Hayden gets picked up by Ducati. Honda has been treating him like crap. Hayden and Pedrosa have wildly different riding styles and physeek and for 2 years in a row they've made a bike that only worked for one rider...

I think Ducati which fit him much better and I think he has the riding style to tame that bike like only Stoner has been able to do.

I would love to see Hayden -> Ducati (or anywhere not Honda), Spies go to Suzuki or Ducati and Hacking go to Kawasaki...

Where did you hear this from?   I've heard rumors but haven't seen anything official yet (Googling now)...

You've got better sources than I do then, because I haven't heard a mouse peep about this that was based on facts v. hopes and dreams and assumptions. Hayden is still under contract to keep his mouth closed despite the fact that it's silly season. His contract is fairly strict and detailed in this area compared to a few other teams.
